The former international three-day eventer, James Coonan is perhaps the only living Irish professional artist who has competed at international standard in a sport. Horses are in his blood. His father, the late Bobby Coonan, was seven- times national hunt champion jockey, and his mother, Shelagh, evented for England. James was brought up in Kildare, and now lives in Co. Tipperary with his wife and two daughters.
James is self-taught and specialises in still-life paintings. Initially a hobby, his skill developed and soon attracted the attention of serious buyers. He likes to think his paintings reflect the traditional values of the Old Masters, rather than those of more modern movements. He paints the ever day things which touch our lives, in the hope of capturing their fleeting beauty. His canvasses show his fascination with the vibrant and transforming effects of light, on both colour and form.
James has exhibited in many exhibitions including at the Royal Dublin Society . His work can be seen in top galleries in Ireland and the UK.
